Product case study · B2C · Consumer
Google shows you where ATMs are. Not what they do.
NearBy was built to solve a real frustration — walking to an ATM only to find it doesn't support cash deposit. Location without capability is incomplete information.
The problem
Google Maps tells you where an ATM is. It doesn't tell you whether it accepts deposits, whether it has cash, or whether it's functional. You only find out when you're standing in front of it. The failure cost is a wasted trip.
Who it's for
Urban India, 25–45. Someone depositing cash before a deadline. Someone low on fuel at night. Someone needing a 24-hour pharmacy. High intent, time-sensitive, zero tolerance for wrong results.
Key product decisions
Why no ratings or reviews?
Every feature that adds noise to a utility app is a failure of product thinking. Reviews increase cognitive load at the exact moment users need speed.
Why "Open now" is always on by default?
Nobody searches for a closed ATM intentionally. Defaulting to open removes one decision from an urgent moment.
Why list-first, not map-first?
Distance ranking answers "which one should I go to" faster than spatial layout. Map answers "where exactly" — that's step two.
Why three categories and not more?
ATM, petrol, pharmacy are the three highest-urgency utility searches in urban India. Three things done perfectly beats ten things done adequately.
What we measure
Navigate taps per session — the north star. If someone taps navigate, the app did its job.
Time to first result — under 5 seconds is the target.
Filter usage — which capability filters are used most tells us the real unmet needs.
Return rate — high return = genuine utility, not curiosity.
On the data
Location data from OpenStreetMap via Overpass API — free and open source. Capability data is illustrative. In production this connects to bank-published APIs. The product insight is the design — the data pipeline is an integration problem, not a product problem.
